Use Visualizations in Data Central

This article is currently being updated. Please come back later for updates.

Permissions: Any Data Central user can view, create, and edit a visualization, but to save a visualization as public or edit public visualizations, the user must have the Data Central Designer privilege.

Data Central Visualizations allow users to view, create, edit, and save charts, custom listings, and pivot tables in Data Central. Visualizations can be saved as private or public and scoped to one or multiple studies. These visualizations can be used within Data Central just like listing panels, and can be docked, re-sized, and saved as part of a Data Central workspace. By using Data Central Visualizations, raw data can be reviewed visually in Data Central. Any study data domain configured to display within Data Central can be the source of data for these visualizations. Currently, the types of visualizations include Combo (bar / line), Pie, Scatter / Bubble, Box and Whisker, Timeline, Custom Listing, Pivot Table, Treemap, and Histogram.

Visualizations are accessed from the left navigation. Any charts, custom listings, or pivot tables that have been created and saved publicly display, as well as any you created and saved (as private). Hover over a visualization name in the left navigation to access the edit and configure icons. These icons only appear if you have the privileges to the visualization you are hovering over.

  1. Click on the visualization name you wish to open.
    ListofViz.png
  2. The visualization opens in a new panel on the sheet.
  3. Dock the panel to the sheet if you wish to use the visualization along with other panels on the sheet.

Available Menu Actions

  • Create a new visualization by clicking on the + icon. To view details on how to create and manage a specific visualization, go to the specific article e.g. Create and Manage Pivot Tables in Visualizations.
  • Collapse / expand the list of folders and visualizations shown below Visualizations by clicking on the arrow icon (down when collapsed, up when expanded).
  • Scroll to see and select visualizations and folders.
  • Search in the list of visualizations by clicking the Search icon and entering text into the Search field. As you enter text, visualization names with that text display.

Tip: Each type of visualization has a unique set of icons in the toolbar. Hover over an icon to learn the function. Some are actions and some are toggles, a highlighted icon indicates it is active.

Visualization Filters

There are two types of filters that can be applied to visualizations: one that affects all opened panels on the sheet and another that applies exclusively to the specific visualization.

Set a Visualization Filter Across Panels

  1. Click on a section of the chart, a label on the x-axis (not applicable to custom listings or pivot tables), or an item in a legend. All other panels will filter to display only records based on that selection.
  2. Click another section of the chart to clear the previous selection and update the panels, filtering them to the new selection instead.

Identify Filters Applied Across Visualizations

  1. Open the Filter Panel in the left navigation by clicking on the Filter Panel icon in the master header.Vis_2.png
In the example above, the green bar in Possibly Related was selected. The solid green bar changed from being solid to striped, indicating what you selected.
  2. In the Filter Panel, under Visualization Filters, the number of filters applied is in the blue badge, and the name of the visualization with the applied filters displayed below.
    1. If a selection is made directly in the chart, the visualization may be filtered for more than one item. However, if a label from the x-axis or legend is selected, only one filter will be applied.

Clear Visualization Filters Applied Across Panels

There are multiple ways to clear applied filters from Visualizations.

  1. To clear a single visualization filter: from the Filter Panel, in the Visualization Filters section, click the 'x' to the right of the applied filter.
  2. To clear all visualization filters: from the Filter Panel, in the Visualization Filters section, click the Clear Visualization Filters to the right of Visualization Filters.
  3. Click in the white space of any chart.

Set a Filter in the Visualization Panel Only

Filters applied within the panel do not display in the Filter Panel in the left navigation.

  1. Click the Add Filter icon in the panel toolbar.
  2. Enter the filter parameters.
  3. Click Ok.

Clear the Panel Filter

  1. Click the Edit Filter icon.

Dynamic Dimensions Icon_ShowDynamicDimensions.png

Charts with defined Dynamic Dimensions will display a highlighted Show Dynamic Dimensions icon in the toolbar. When the icon is highlighted, toggle buttons will appear at the top left of the chart. Notice in the screenshot above the three toggle buttons are AEREL, AEOUT, and AETOXGR. To view the chart by one of these fields, click the toggle button and the chart updates accordingly.

To hide the toggle buttons, click on the same icon (Hide Dynamic Dimensions).

Dynamic Measures

Charts that have Dynamic Measures defined will display a bolded label with a + (plus sign). Click on the label and any added dynamic measure field will display as checkboxes. By default the primary measure is displayed on the y-axis, (left label). As fields are checked, a label and line marker is added to the right side of the chart, and the chart updates according to the selected items.
