Use the Browser in the SCE

The SCE Browser provides the folder structure for all SCE programs, documents, and outputs. Initially, the Global folder is selected and its contents display in the main window.

Statistical Computing Environment Browser

The left navigation panel shows the folder structure for studies selected from the Study Selector drop-down in the master header, along with all other accessible areas for the user.  

  • Global: Available to all users; all users have read / write access.
  • My Workspace: Available only to the current user. 
  • Study Folders: Available to users with the View privilege for the selected study.

Left Navigation

  • Expand / Collapse Folders: Click the side or down arrows to expand or collapse folders.
  • View Folder Contents: Click a folder name to display its subfolders or programs in the main window.
  • Rename a Folder: Hover over a folder name and click the Pencil icon. A popout opens; update the folder name, then click the checkmark to save or X to cancel.
  • Add a Subfolder: Hover over a folder name and click the Add Subfolder icon. A popout opens; update New Folder with the desired name, then click the checkmark to save or click X to cancel.
  • Search: Use the Search drop-down to search by Name, Status, Version, Execution Output, Locked By, Has Dependencies, Is Dependency, Modified By, or Review Comment. In the Search field, select an option from the drop-down or enter text and press Enter. Matching folders and files display, and the Filters icon in the toolbar becomes highlighted. To reset the left navigation to include all folders and files, click the Filters icon and select Clear Filters.

Use the Main Window

The main window displays the contents of the folder selected in the left navigation. These may include subfolders or program files.

Columns include File (or Folder) Name, Status, Issues, Version, Execution Output, Size (KB), Locked By, Has Dependencies, Is Dependency, Modified Date, Modified By, Last Run Date, and Review Comment.

Sort / Filter: Click a column header and select Sort Ascending, Sort Descending, or Filter.

Fix Columns: Right-click a column header and select Fix to the left or To the right.

Breadcrumbs: Use hyperlinked breadcrumbs to navigate folder and subfolders. Click a folder name in the breadcrumb to open its contents. 

Double-click a folder name, and the contents display (the folder name then displays in the breadcrumb).

Open Folders and Files:

  • Double-click a folder name to display its content (the folder name then appears in the breadcrumb).
  • Double-click a file name to open it in the Editor.

Pagination: At the bottom of the window, adjust how many rows display per page (default: 100) and use the arrows on the right to navigate between pages.

Tip: When Is Dependency is Y, click the Y to open a window showing the full dependency tree, indicating where the item is used in other programs.

Perform Actions

Actions can be performed using the toolbar icons or by right-clicking a folder or file name. Available actions depend on the selected folder or file; some actions are only available via toolbar icons.

  • New File: Opens the New File window. Enter the name and description, select the parent folder, then click Save or Cancel.
  • Next / Previous Page: Navigate between pages when multiple rows of files or folders exist.
  • Add Folder / Subfolder: Opens the Add Folder window. Enter the folder name, then click Add or Cancel.
  • Upload: Opens the Upload a File window. Drag and drop files or browse to select. When uploading ZIP files, select Extract all contents (including subdirectories) if desired.
  • Download: Downloads the selected file to the local system.
  • Copy: Opens the Copy Folder window. Select the destination folder, use the Search field or scrollbar as needed, then click Copy or Cancel.
  • Move: Opens the Move Folder window. Select the destination folder, then click Move or Cancel.
  • Rename: Opens the Rename Folder window. Update the name, then click Rename or Cancel.
  • Properties: Opens the Program Details window, displaying file properties. Options include Edit (Name and Description) or Open the file in the Editor. Click X or Close to exit.
  • Edit Properties: Opens the Edit Properties window. Update the Name and Description, then click Save or Cancel. Click the Open icon to open the file directly in the Editor.
  • Compare: Compare a text-based file to another file to track version changes or view differences.
  • Run Program: Select an executable program (for example, .sas), then click Run Program.
  • Lock / Unlock Files: Click a file or hold Ctrl to select multiple files to lock or unlock.
  • Launch in RStudio: Launch files in an isolated RStudio session for an interactive development experience. Requires an RStudio license per URL.
  • Launch in SAS Studio: Launch files in an isolated SAS Studio session for an interactive development experience. Requires a SAS Studio license linked to the user’s elluminate account.
  • Issues: Select Create Issue or View Issues.
  • Change Status: Available options depend on the current status of the file:
    • In Development - Submit for Review
    • In Review - Submit for Approval or Failed Review. If Failed Review is selected, a window opens allowing comments to be entered.
    • For Approval - Move to Production or Failed Approval. If Failed Approval is selected, a window opens comments to be entered.
    • In Production - Return to Development or Retire.
  • Delete: Click a file, then click the Delete icon. A message displays if the file cannot be deleted due to program dependencies.
  • Refresh: Refreshes the list of folders and files.
  • Filters: The Filters icon indicates when filters are active. A grayed-out filter indicates no filters are applied; a highlighted filter indicates at least one filter is applied. Click Clear Filters to remove all filters, or use individual filter icons to remove individually.

Note: Browser users can access only studies selected in the Study Selector in the master header. Even with View permissions, unselected studies are not accessible. Study selections can be modified through the Study Selector.
