Use Visualizations in Data Central

This article is currently being updated. Please come back later for updates.

Permissions: Any Data Central user can view, create, and edit a visualization, but the user must have the Data Central Designer privilege to save a visualization as public or edit public visualizations.

Data Central Visualizations allow users to view, create, edit, and save charts, custom listings, and pivot tables in Data Central. Visualizations can be saved as private or public and scoped to one or multiple studies. These visualizations can be used within Data Central just like listing panels and can be docked, re-sized, and saved as part of a Data Central workspace. By using Data Central Visualizations, users can visualize their data, easily identifying outliers and trends. Any of the study's domains that are configured to display within Data Central can be the source of data for these visualizations. Currently, the visualization types include Combo (bar / line), Pie, Scatter / Bubble, Box & Whisker, Timeline, Custom Listing, Pivot Table, Treemap, and Histogram.

Note: System Tables, which contain operational data, can be used in visualizations. Although users cannot view or query these tables directly, they can request charts and custom listings that utilize the data from them. Any chart or listing created from System Tables is visible and usable by all dashboard viewers once saved.

Tables available for request include: Issue, Query, Review Objectives, Review Objectives Domains and Fields, Review Objectives Review Materials, Review Objectives Reviewer Roles, Review Status Metrics by Domain and Role, Review Status Metrics by Domain and Role and Subject, and Subject.

In the left navigation, expand the Visualizations section by clicking the collapse / expand icon. There are two folders: elluminate and Custom. Click the folder or the collapse / expand icon to view its contents.

  • The elluminate folder contains pre-configured, out-of-the-box visualizations for all Data Central users. The displayed visualizations depend on the study's configuration and the user permissions. Keep an eye out for new charts in the elluminate folder.
  • The Custom folder contains visualizations created by users and saved as Public, along with the user's private visualizations. Private visualizations will appear in italics. Users must have the Data Central Designer privilege to save a visualization as Public, which allows everyone access. Hovering over a visualization name in the left navigation provides access to the edit and configure icons if the user has the required privileges.

Data Central Visualization Filters

When working with Visualizations, users can apply Visualization, Global, and Panel filters. Click the Filter Panel icon in the Master Header to open the Filter panel over the left navigation. It contains sections for the three types of filters.

In the example below are two charts: AE Severity Grade and AE Outcomes, along with the underlying AE listing on which the charts are based and the Subjects listing.

Data Central Visualization Filters

Visualization Filters

Visualization filters can affect all open panels in the workspace sheet or only affect a specific visualization.

Visualization Filters for All Panels

  1. When selecting one or more segments from a chart, label(s), or legend item(s), it filters all relevant charts and listings, showing only the corresponding records from the same underlying domain.

Note: Chart sections, labels, or legend items can not be mixed when applying a Visualization Filter.

    Visualization Filters

On the AE Severity Grade chart, we clicked the Grade 2-No (37 records) and Grade 3-Yes (11 records) sections, changing the solid color to striped to indicate the filter selections. Note that the AE listing has been filtered to 48 rows, and all the other panels display only records based on the selected records.

Note: Filters can be applied to only one chart at a time. Clicking a selection in a different chart clears the filter selection in the previous chart and replaces it with the new selection.

  2. To view the applied filters, go to the Visualization Filters section in the Filter panel on the left side. The section header displays a blue badge indicating the number of filter selections. Below the header, a filter pill shows the chart name and the filters. Click the filter pill to view the details of the filter values. Details will be in a table or a comma separated list.

  3. There are several ways to clear a Visualization Filter:
    • Click on the striped section of the chart to remove the filter and the section changes back to solid.
    • Click in the white space of any chart.
    • In the Filter Panel:
      • Click the Clear Filter Icon_29.png icon, in the header of the Visualization Filters section..
      • Click the 'X' to the right of the filter pill, in the Filter Panel.
      • Click the filter pill to view details, then click the 'X' to the right to clear.

Visualization Filter for Panel Only

  1. Click the Add Filter icon in the chart's toolbar.
  2. Enter the filter parameters.

    Panel Filter

  3. Click OK.

Note: The toolbar filter only impacts the visualization to which it has been applied.

  4. To remove, click the Edit Filter icon, then click the 'X' next to the filter condition. After clearing the filter, the domain name persists. To reset the domain, click in the Domain field and select another domain.

Global Filters

Global Filters apply to all sheets in a workspace, filtering the subjects in all other panels that meet the Global Filter conditions.

  1. Right-click on the section of the chart to filter by. The Filter Subjects option filters all subjects across every panel in the workspace, allowing for focused analysis of specific subject groups and their related data.

    Filter Subjects Option

For example, to view only subjects without a serious adverse event in Toxicity Grade 3, we right-click on the relevant section of a chart and select Filter Subjects from the sub-menu. Now, every chart and listing in the workspace will be filtered by the subjects that meet the Global Filter conditions specified.

Note: The option Filter To Selected Records functions the same as Visualization Filters.

  2. Global Filters can be viewed and edited in several locations within the workspace. Clicking on any of the filter pills displays a drop-down menu containing details.

    Filter Pills Display Drop-down Menu

    • Global Filter pills are in the Master Header.
    • Filter pills are in the Global Filters section on the Filter panel.
    • Click on the blue badge in any Listing panel for a drop-down with the Global Filter pills.
    • Click on any of the Global Filter pills to edit or clear the filter. Note that any changes made to a Global Filter affect all panels and sheets in the workspace.

      Global Filters

Tip: When a Global Filter is applied, regardless of the complexity, it narrows down the subject list, ensuring that all open panels display records only for those subjects.

  3. There are several ways to clear a Global Filter:
    • Click the 'X' to the right in any global filter pill located on the Master Header, on the Filter panel or on the filter pop-up in a Listing panel.
    • Click the Clear Filter icon in the header of the Global Filters section on the Filter panel.
    • Click the Clear button, on the filter details dropdown that appears when any global filter pill is clicked.

Note: To clear all filters across every panel on a workspace sheet, click the Clear Filter icon at the top of the Filter panel. A pop-up will appear to confirm the deletion.

Panel Filters

Panel Filters are created within the Listing panels of a workspace sheet and will display in the Panels section on the Filter panel. For more details on creating and working with Panel Filters, see the Use Filters in Data Central article in the Data Central section.

Dynamic Filters

All visualizations can be configured with Dynamic Filters, allowing users to pre-specify fields and values to be used for filtering, enabling additional interactivity. These filters appear as drop-downs at the top of the visualization.

Dynamic Filters

To use a Dynamic Filter, click on the drop-down, and a pop-up will appear, allowing users to select filter values. The visualization will update accordingly once Apply is clicked.

Use Dynamic Filter

Note: These filters only apply to the specific visualization and will not affect other panels.

Dynamic Dimensions

Charts with Dynamic Dimensions enable users to switch between dimensions, prompting the chart to update automatically. The dynamic dimensions are presented at the top or bottom of the chart along the x-axis in two different formats, appearing as toggle buttons or a drop-down menu.

Dynamic Dimensions

In the chart above, notice that there are toggle buttons for SITE, AETOXGR, and AEOUT with the SITE button selected. Click on the other buttons to view the chart by that field.

Dynamic Dimensions

The above chart was designed with a drop-down for selecting the dimension, and the AEOUT field is selected. The drop-down is helpful when there are too many toggle buttons, or the labels are too long.

Dynamic Measures

Charts with Dynamic Measures enable users to customize their displayed measures by selecting fields from the drop-down. The chart then updates automatically based on the selections.

Dynamic Measures

A bolded label with a drop-down arrow will appear along the y-axis if Dynamic Measures have been configured. The drop-down will list the possible measures to choose from with a checkbox beside each one. As fields are checked or unchecked, the chart will update accordingly, displaying additional axes on the right side of the chart with a value range and axis label.

Note: If the chart has been rotated, the dimensions will be along the y-axis and the measures along the x-axis

Toolbar Actions

Each type of visualization chart includes a toolbar in the top right corner of the chart window. The icons vary depending on the chart type being viewed and the user's permissions. Most visualizations have similar toolbar functions; however, some icons are unique to specific visualizations.

Hover over the icon to view its label. When an icon is highlighted blue, it indicates that it is activated / on, whereas when icon is gray it is deactivated / off.
