Metadata provides options to analyze metadata associated with data integrated into elluminate and confirm that data are in the expected structure across one or more studies. Metadata can be browsed, searched, compared, and exported.

Note: When Metadata is accessed from a study-specific area of elluminate, the current study is automatically selected and its most recent metadata version is loaded. When Metadata is accessed without a study context, the study selector defaults to the first available study.

Metadata displays studies and global data stores based on access permissions.

Browse Metadata

1. From the Platform Menu, select Metadata under Metadata Management. The Browse tab displays by default.
   
    
2. From Study, select a study or global data store. Global data stores display at the bottom of the list. The associated data stores display.
3. Select a metadata version. The most recent version, based on Create Date, is selected by default. Select an earlier version to view previous metadata.
   

Note: Metadata versioning supports tracing changes to studies or global data stores at the study, domain, and variable levels over time, including newly added datasets and variable changes. If only one version exists, the metadata has not changed since the initial import.

4. Select a data store to display the associated domains. The Data Stores list includes the data store name, number of domains, variables, and rows, creation date, selected tags, and last refresh date.
   
5. Select a domain to display the associated variables. The Domains list includes the domain name, domain label, number of variables and rows, data source, selected tags, last refresh date, and data date.

The Variables list includes the variable name, variable label, data type, length, and critical flag.

Note: Studies with the eIQ Data Classification algorithm enabled include three additional columns: Concept Name Tags with an algorithm-generated similarity score, Concept Label Tags, and Concept Domain Tags. The algorithm uses SDTM and CDASH standards to identify common field concepts and matches study source fields that share those concepts. A similarity score is assigned to each match to indicate the strength of the association.

6. Select a Variable Name to open the Variable Version History window.
   

Filter Metadata

Use the filter buttons to control which metadata displays across the Data Stores, Domains, and Variables lists. New and Changed are selected by default. Solid icons indicate active filters.

• New: Displays new additions highlighted in green.
• Changed: Displays changes since the last import or metadata version, highlighted in yellow.
• Deleted: Displays items deleted since the previous import or metadata version, highlighted in red.
• Differences: Filters the lists to display only items that have changed since the previous import or metadata version.

View Data Lineage

View data lineage for domains that undergo transformations in Mapper. The Sankey chart displays the selected domain and its upstream and downstream mapping dependencies.

1. Select a domain.
2. Select Data Lineage. The visual opens in a separate window.
3. Select Close or the X icon to close the window.

View Domain Version History

1. Select a domain.
2. Select Domain History.
   
3. Select Close or the X icon to close the window.

Export Browse Results

Export data store metadata to Excel or XML. The exported file includes details for the selected data store.

1. Select the data store to export. Export Excel and Export XML become available.
2. Select Export Excel or Export XML.

The Excel export includes a summary worksheet followed by one worksheet for each domain in the data store. Domain worksheets include Variable Name, Variable Label, Data Type, Length, and SAS Format.

The XML export includes the selected data store metadata.

Add Tags to Data Stores and Domains

Tags identify Data Stores and Domains with shared usage for exporting. A Data Store or Domain can have multiple tags. Tags applied at the Data Store (schema) level apply to all current and future domains. The Metadata Editor privilege is required to apply tags.

1. From the Data Stores or Domains list, select the drop-down arrow in the Tags column.
   • Enter text in the Search field to filter the list.
2. Select the checkbox for each tag to apply.

Designate Variables as Critical

The Metadata Editor privilege is required to designate variables as critical within a domain. Variables marked as critical are flagged in Data Central Issues and Queries listings.

1. Select the study or global data store, then select the data store and domain to display the list of variables.
2. Select the checkbox in the Critical column to mark variables as critical.
   
3. Click Save.

Delete a Domain

A domain added accidentally during an import can be deleted from Metadata. The Metadata Editor privilege is required to delete domains.

Important: Deleting a domain cannot be undone.

1. Select the study data store that contains the domains to be deleted.
2. Select the checkbox for each domain to delete. Use the Last Refresh column to identify the correct data.
3. Select Delete. The Delete Summary window displays dependencies and prompts for confirmation.
   
4. Select Delete to confirm the deletion, or select Cancel to cancel the action.
